Dental Crown Jackson Heights NY

Dental crowns are a restorative dental treatment that Dr. Fedida uses to cover and protect weakened, stained, and damaged teeth. They can also cap off dental implants and other dental restorations. Dental crowns are one of the most versatile tools a dentist has at their disposal. Not only do they treat many restorative problems, but they can also take care of some cosmetic ones, too!

At Fedida Family Dentistry and Dental Spa, Dr. Haim Fedida provides durable dental crowns made of porcelain ceramic. Porcelain dental crowns not only help balance the smile but look and feel like real teeth. Porcelain crowns can change the color, shape, and durability of teeth and dental implants.

Dental Crowns in Jackson Heights, NY

A dental crown is a prosthetic device that our dentist places over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Our dentist can use a porcelain crown to cover a damaged tooth, repair a worn-down tooth, to reinforce a tooth with a large filling, to hold a dental bridge in place, or as a cosmetic enhancement. Furthermore, we also use a dental crown to cap off a tooth after a root canal procedure, and to restore a dental implant.

The Process to Get a Dental Crown

To begin the dental crown process, we will first conduct a thorough exam of your mouth, teeth, and gums. The entire process will take two visits to our dental office. Next, we will take x-rays of the area to assess the teeth and surrounding bone. This step will ensure that we are providing the correct treatment for your needs and don’t miss any other issues.

Then, our dentist will prepare the tooth or teeth receiving the dental crown. He may remove a portion of the tooth structure to make sure no infections are present. This will also guarantee that the porcelain dental crown will fit properly on top of the tooth. He may not need to do this if he is placing the crown for a root canal treatment.

After preparing the tooth, Dr. Fedida will take dental impressions of your mouth to create a model. He will use the model to make a custom-fit temporary crown that will provide protection to the tooth until the permanent crown is ready. We will send the model to our dental laboratory to fabricate the new porcelain crown. The laboratory technician takes the impression and makes a wax replica of the shape and size of the crown they are designing for you.

Once complete, the dental lab will send the finished porcelain crown to us. At your second visit, Dr. Fedida will fit the crown over the affected tooth and ensure a proper fit and bite. Finally, he will bond your new crown to the tooth using dental cement, and color-match the crown for a seamless look!

If you are receiving a porcelain crown for your dental implant, your mouth needs to fully heal before we can place the crown. The healing process for dental implants takes 3 to 6 months. To learn more about our dental implants procedure, see Dental Implants.

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are alternatives to dental crowns that cover the cusps or top of teeth. However, dentists use them when damage is too great for a filling, but not enough for a complete dental crown. They can consist of porcelain, composite resin, or gold and form a permanent bond with the tooth’s surface.

Onlays, also known as partial crowns, cover one or more of the tooth cusps. Inlays fit inside the cusps of a tooth, or can fill the area between the tooth cusps. Both provide strength and protection against further damage, but are best for preventing future tooth decay. Inlays and onlays may also protect teeth after a root canal treatment.

Dental Crown FAQs

Patients may have the following common questions about porcelain dental crowns and their restorative treatment. Continue reading to learn more about our dental crowns.

Do dental crowns hurt?

The dentist numbs the area around the tooth or teeth receiving the dental crowns during the procedure for your comfort. You may feel tooth sensitivity after the procedure, but the pain is minimal and shouldn’t last long. If you are feeling excessive pain, please contact our office for care as soon as possible.

How do dental crowns compare to dental fillings?

Dental fillings consist of composite resin and are on the inside of the tooth and within the tooth cusps. Tooth crowns fit over the entire visible portion of your tooth. Because of this, dental crowns can fix the shape and color of a tooth and support weakened teeth.

Can dental crowns fall out?

Yes, dental crowns can loosen due to damage or tooth decay. If you notice any changes in the fit or comfort of your tooth crown, please contact our office. We will help replace your crown and treat any infection.

Can I use a Dental Crown to whiten my smile?

Dentists usually fix discolored teeth using professional teeth whitening services. But not all discoloration responds to this treatment. Teeth with deep stains from medication or discoloration due to trauma need another solution. If you have a one or two stained teeth that stick out, we can use a dental crown to hide the imperfection. We color-match dental crowns to the shade you desire. They will completely cover the stained tooth and brighten your smile.
